Family Tips

For a maternity session

Clothes- Less is more for maternity portraits. You may choose to do some of your pictures nude for the classic profile shot or try some tasteful lingerie that puts the focus on the belly. If Dad has a plain white button down shirt, put that on with a pair of jeans or just lacey panties and unbutton it so your belly shows. A sheer blanket or drape across your chest, exposing the belly is also beautiful. If you prefer to remain fully clothed for your pictures, try to stick to a fitted maternity shirt or dress that will emphasize the belly.

Length of pregnancy- You want to be sure to book your session at the right time so that your belly is fairly large but not uncomfortably large. The best time to do maternity pictures is around 6-7 months depending on your preference.

For a newborn session

Clothes- A baby is a gift from God in its most natural form. The best way to photograph a new born baby is in their birthday suit! You don’t want to cover your baby up in too much clothing; the more simple, the better. If you want to have some pictures done in the outfit they came home in or the pretty dress from Grandma, that is great as well. A hat, headband or blanket can be very cute for pictures too.

Pets- Some of the most adorable baby photos are ones with the family pet. If you have a well behaved dog or cat that will be growing up with the baby, bring them along. Make sure they are clean and groomed for their pictures as well.

Parents- Don’t be shy. Being born is a big event for you baby but it is also a big event for you as well. Plan on being in some of your baby’s photos, even if you don’t feel like you are ready for pictures after just having a baby. You will always cherish the photos of your baby curled up sound asleep in your arms. Wear simple clothing, such as a solid black or white shirt. You can also go topless to coordinate with your baby’s attire. A photo of your tiny baby curled up in Dad’s muscular arms or in the palms of his hands is classic.

For a session with the whole family

Clothes- Family portraits look best if everyone has similar clothing. It isn’t necessary to have the exact same shirt or color of shirt but the color scheme and style should match. Black or white shirts are always classic and photograph well.

Kids- Kids can be a bit ornery when put in front of a camera so try to schedule your session at a time when they are most cooperative. Feel free to bring your child’s favorite toy to have their pictures taken with. I typically don’t suggest bribing your child with treats or other things they might want to try and get them to smile. This usually turns their attention away from the camera and all they can focus on is getting the treat.

Pets- Pets are great in family pictures because after all, they are part of the family right? Be sure to bathe and groom your animal before the session. Also try to make sure they have had plenty of exercise before the session so they are not too energetic.

Card/Album Design- If you are planning on using the pictures for your holiday card, keep that in mind for clothing choices and pets, props, etc. Santa hats are always fun for Christmas pictures. You could even pick up some party favors for the family pictures for a New Years card!
